Questions and answers
Kitchen remodel FAQ
Short answers to what Kearney homeowners ask most about planning a kitchen remodel. Each guide on this site has its own questions as well. Anything we have not covered here is a good thing to raise on the call.
Calling us
Who actually does the remodeling?
The contractor you hire does the work. Your contract, price, schedule and workmanship are all between you and that business.
Does calling commit me to anything?
No. You can end the conversation at any point, get other quotes or decide to do nothing at all.
What if I am outside Kearney?
This number takes calls from zip codes 68845, 68847, 68848 and 68849 only. Other areas are not covered at this time.
Why a phone number and not a form?
Because a kitchen has too many details for a form. A conversation also shows you straight away how well a remodeler listens.
Cost
What should I budget for a kitchen remodel?
Start from the scope. A refresh, a same-layout remodel and a full remodel are very different projects. Our cost guide gives sourced national figures and a planning estimator.
How much cushion should I keep?
Plan about 10 percent in a newer home and 15 to 20 percent in a house from before 1980.
What is the biggest single cost?
Usually cabinets, followed by labor. Moving plumbing, gas or walls can overtake them on a full remodel.
Can I do part of the work myself?
You might handle painting or demolition, if the remodeler agrees and the house has no lead paint concerns. Settle it in writing before work starts, and ask Kearney Building Services about rules for electrical and plumbing work.
Materials and winter
Why do floorboards open up in winter?
Heated air gets very dry in cold weather, and wood gives up moisture and shrinks. Small gaps in winter are common and usually close in humid months.
Do I need a humidifier after a remodel?
It can help. Common guidance for wood flooring is to keep indoor humidity around 30 to 50 percent. Ask whether a furnace-mounted unit makes sense for your house.
Is engineered flooring better than solid wood here?
It moves less, as a rule, because its layers restrain each other. Solid wood can still do well with proper acclimation and humidity. Ask to see the manufacturer's humidity range.
What backsplash holds up best near a range?
Glazed ceramic or porcelain tile is a dependable choice. Natural stone may need sealing, and any grout line near the range benefits from a stain-resistant product.
The project
How long does a kitchen remodel take?
A refresh in the same layout may take a couple of weeks on site. A full remodel may take a couple of months or more. Cabinet lead times, permits and old-house surprises all add to that.
Can I live at home during the remodel?
Usually. Set up a temporary kitchen in another room, and ask how dust will be contained. If the house was built before 1978, ask about lead-safe practices, especially with small children.
What is the best time of year to start?
Kitchens are interior work, so weather matters less than with most projects. Start planning well ahead of any date that matters, such as the holidays, because cabinets take time to arrive.
Who is responsible for checking a contractor's license and insurance?
You are. Ask for proof, check Nebraska registration and confirm with the City. Our home page explains where to look.
